The program consists of gentle floor and pool exercises as well as relaxation techniques. As well increasing the mobility and flexibility in the upper body the exercises help to maintain the lymphatic system, reducing the risk of lymphoedema, renewing self esteem and fostering a positive attitude.
As a part of the recovery process for women with breast cancer, YWCA Australia provides a specially designed exercise program to help women overcome the physical problems associated with breast cancer and provide them with the opportunity to meet other women in the same situation.
YWCA ENCORE provides exercises designed to counteract the discomfort of breast cancer surgery.
The program complements other support services but is unique in its approach and design in that "it is designed specifically by women for women and generally occurs away from the hospital system which many women appreciate".
Sharing common experiences, concerns and feelings is an important part of the recovery process.
The program is safe, fun and therapeutic.
YWCA ENCORE aims to help women:
- Gain maximum mobility and flexibility in their arms and shoulders;
- improve their lymphatic system and help reduce the risk of lymphoedema;
- relieve the ongoing discomfort some women experience as a result of axilla (lymph node) surgery;
- renew self esteem and self image; and
- create a positive and productive attitude to life.
YWCA ENCORE is more than an exercise program.
The YWCA ENCORE program is designed for women who have had breast surgery at any time in their lives, not only those recovering from recent surgery. Everyone is welcome.
