About the Film

YWCA NSW has collaborated with two Sydney filmmakers Bec Lorrimer and Kate Gwynne to produce YWCA Encore: a Journey Forward, a moving, short film that charts a woman's emotional journey through breast cancer.

Carolyn Altman, the woman whose story the film focuses on, believes "When you are first diagnosed with breast cancer everyone says, "I wish I could understand what you are going through, but I can't." I did this short film in the hope that family and friends of newly diagnosed women will be able to understand. The YWCA Encore Program helped me so much both in providing a support group of local women and giving me back my physical mobility and strength, that I wanted other women to understand the benefits of this program".

"Working with two young filmmakers Bec Lorrimer and Kate Gwynne, YWCA NSW has developed a short film that reaches out and speaks to people about the intensity of a woman's emotional journey from diagnosis to recovery." said Lisa Page, Encore Manger NSW.

The emotional impact of this film is achieved through a mixed media approach that combines both realistic and abstract elements. The use of film, digital video, still photographs & mammogram scans cut together in a montage, evokes the difficult experiences that many women go through.
