 History
USA, the beginning... The Encore program was originally developed in the United States by ballet teacher, Helen Clines Kohut. Having experienced breast cancer surgery herself, Helen saw a need to assist other women with similar experences to re-build their physical and emotional strength. Although support programs existed, none dealt with the physical constraints and pain breast cancer surgery resulted in.
In consultation with National YWCA of USA, a pilot project was set up in 30 YWCA's in the USA to test the programs effectiveness. Based on a study of these programs a Review Committee of Medical and Health Consultants recommended Encore to be a safe and effective program for post mastectomy women. The expansion of the program was possible through funding from Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade.
Australia... Following an approach by women who were having trouble finding an appropriate support program, Encore was brought to Melbourne, Australia in 1983 under license from the YWCA of the United States. Since then the National YWCA of Australia has become a registered Encore provider.
The program ran successfully in Melbourne and as its reputation spread, so did requests for its expansion. The unique approach of combining exercise and support answered an enormous need in the community. It is now in over 40 centres Australia-wide.
