Mrs (Kathleen) Ann Hollingworth

Born Kathleen Ann Turner on 19 May 1936 in Brighton, Melbourne, the eldest of four sisters, Ann spent her early years in Hobart at the Fahan School before returning with her family to Melbourne. She attended Korowa Anglican Girls Grammar School where in her final year she was Vice Captain and House Captain, and went on to study Physiotherapy at Melbourne University.

After graduating, Ann worked for two years at Mt Royal Geriatric Centre before specializing in obstetric physiotherapy, running her own practice.

She and Peter married in 1960. They have three children, Deborah, Fiona and Sarah, and six grandchildren.

Ann maintained her physiotherapy practice throughout married life, specializing in geriatrics, women's health and orthopedics, finally working at the Royal Women's Hospital in Brisbane. She retired from practice in 1998.

She moved to Canberra in 2001 when Peter was appointed Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and during their term in office was patron of many charitable organizations.

In April 2003 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently underwent a right mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy. Ann returned to Melbourne in June 2003. Ann continues her breast cancer treatment by oral tamoxifen.

Ann is involved with the National Breast Cancer Network (NBCN) - a peak national body with branches in all states as a member of the voluntary team addressing many community groups to provide support and encouragement of other breast cancer survivors.

Ann is also involved with the National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) participating in fund raising, educational programs, research into the early detection of breast cancer and breast cancer in indigenous communities.

In addition to that Ann volunteers her time, to support fundraising activities with the National Breast Cancer Foundation for events such h as the annual Mother's Day Classic Fun Run.

Ann also volunteers as a member of the Australian Lymphoedema Association providing support, information and diagnosis to new patients. In April 2004 Ann opened the 5th Australasian Lymphoedema Conference in Brisbane.

Ann's hobbies include gardening and golf, and she has a keen interest in the arts and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
